The 3rd Vice-Chancellor's Research and Innovation Grant was announced in 2026 as part of the university's commitment to strengthening its research and innovation culture while contributing to national development.
Proposals were invited under nine thematic areas. Following the review process, the Committee evaluated three proposals, with two proposals receiving the grant.
The successful recipients were Dr. Eric Kibet, under Policy and Governance, for his research on artificial intelligence in legal education in Kenya; and Mr. David Ongoma, under Science, Technology and Innovation, for his research on an AI-powered digital skills and entrepreneurship ecosystem aimed at improving graduate employability and SME innovation.
The reviewers highlighted the timeliness of both research topics, particularly their focus on artificial intelligence. They further noted the strong potential of Mr. Ongoma's proposal for adoption and practical implementation, while Dr. Kibet's proposal was recognised for having a well-planned and appropriate budget.
